The Challenge

A New Shop, a New TMS, and a Rebuilt General Ledger

“We moved, built a new shop, moved shops, decided to implement a TMS system in between.”

— Tom Piepiora · VP, McNay Truck Line

Two and a half years ago, McNay Truck got all of its software from one vendor. Then the team changed that approach. Now it picks one partner for each area, and each partner must connect with the others.

Squarerigger became the partner for the shops. During the rollout, McNay also moved its TMS and accounting to McLeod and rebuilt its full GL structure. It built a new shop and moved into it too.

The Solution

Maintenance Data Built to Flow Into McLeod

“We want to find agile partners in each area that… plays nicely with everybody else… And we definitely see it happening with Squarerigger.”

— Tom Piepiora · VP, McNay Truck Line

Squarerigger connects to McLeod, the TMS and accounting system that McNay now runs. The accounting link maps work order and parts costs to the GL structure that McNay sets up.

A Squarerigger specialist with McLeod experience guided the setup. The same specialist helped McNay build its DOT inspection form to the 49 CFR requirements.

The Results

Tablets in the Shops, History in Plain View

Trailer Shop First, Tractor Shop Next

The trailer shop learned Squarerigger fast. The tractor shop needed more time. Now both shop teams use tablets to track their time and work orders.

“As far as we can tell, everybody’s in there using it… getting more comfortable day by day.”

Much More to See on Each Unit

Each tractor and trailer record in Squarerigger has a history tab, with past inspections in the list. Tom sees far more of each unit than before.

“All the history fields and stuff are… great. There’s so much more visibility now than there has been.”

A Shortcut Found Without Training

The shop manager found Smart Fill for PDFs on outside work orders by chance. He first took it for a simple drag-and-drop upload. The shop now likes it a lot.

“Our shop manager stumbled on the smart fill for PDFs on the outside work orders… Big fans of that.”

Requests That Show Up in Updates

McNay sends feature requests to the Squarerigger team. Many of them arrive in later product updates, along with tools the shop did not know it needed.

“Stuff is trickling in… in the various updates that’s like, oh, yeah, hey, we asked for that. Or, I didn’t even know I needed that or wanted that.”

From The Shop Floor

Time and Work Orders, Logged on a Tablet

McNay’s shop teams run Squarerigger on tablets. A tech clocks in and out of each job and updates the work order on the same screen. The tech can also add notes and photos to the job. Inspection forms work on a phone or a tablet too.

How Tom Picks a Software Partner

Make Sure It Connects

“Just easy to integrate, easy to work with.”

Work With a Team That Listens

“Acceptable to recommendations of… the way that we might want to do things.”

Keep One Source of Truth

“The single source of truth should be Squarerigger for everything that has to do with the equipment.”

What Comes Next

Inventory Counts, Then the Full Platform

McNay now loads its inventory counts into Squarerigger, the last step before full use. Tom also sets up the accounting link to McLeod with the Squarerigger team.

“So we’ve had a few things come up, but… our focus is back on it. We’re… pretty close.”

— Tom Piepiora
